Brand overview

MG (Morris Garages) is now owned by SAIC Motor of Shanghai, but the brand retains its UK heritage badge and a strong dealer footprint across the UK and France. It is the third-best-selling EV brand in the UK in 2026 behind Tesla and BYD, and in France MG is the only Chinese-origin EV brand with significant retail-network penetration outside of city centres.

The EV lineup centres on three cars: the MG4 hatchback (the volume seller and Golf/ID.3 rival), the MG ZS EV (compact SUV), and the MG5 EV (the only affordable electric estate on sale). The new Cyberster (electric roadster, £55k) and MGS5 EV (replacing MG ZS EV in 2025) round out the range. All use SAIC-supplied LFP or NMC packs depending on trim.

MG's headline pitch is pricing. The MG4 SE Standard starts from £27,000 in the UK and €30,000 in France/Italy — the cheapest 5-door hatchback EV with a real-world range above 250 km. The Long Range NMC trim adds £3,000 and bumps real range to 380 km. The ZS EV Long Range sits at £32,000.

Weaknesses: MG's residuals (42–46% at 5 years in the UK and France) are weaker than Tesla and Korean rivals due to historical brand-recognition headwinds and aggressive discounting on 2023 stock. The interiors are functional rather than premium. DC charging is mid-pack (117–135 kW peak depending on trim). But MG's 7-year vehicle warranty (UK/EU) and 7-year unlimited-km warranty (Australia, on most trims) is a meaningful counterbalance, and total cost-of-ownership numbers are among the lowest in Europe.

EV model lineup

Charging connector standards

All MG EVs sold in the UK, France, Italy and Australia use Type 2 for AC and CCS2 for DC fast charging. No adapters required for any major public network.

AC charging: 7 kW single-phase on MG4 SE and ZS EV Standard, 11 kW three-phase on MG4 Long Range, Extended Range, Trophy and Cyberster. The MG5 EV is 7 kW only.

DC peak rates: MG4 Standard LFP 117 kW / MG4 Long Range NMC 135 kW / MG4 Extended Range NMC 144 kW / ZS EV Long Range 92 kW / MG5 EV 87 kW / Cyberster 144 kW.

V2L is standard on MG4 Trophy and Extended Range, and on Cyberster — 2.5 kW Type 2 adapter included. Lower trims and MG5 EV / ZS EV do not include V2L.

Charging speeds across the lineup

The MG4 family is the brand's strongest DC charging story. The Extended Range 77 kWh NMC holds 130+ kW from 10–35% SoC, then tapers, completing 10→80% in 28 minutes with a pre-warmed pack. The Long Range 64 kWh NMC peaks at 135 kW with a 30-minute 10→80%.

The Standard 51 kWh LFP MG4 charges to 80% in 38 minutes — acceptable for occasional motorway use, slow for high-mileage road-tripping.

ZS EV (Long Range 72 kWh NMC) peaks at 92 kW for a 40-minute 10→80% session. MG5 EV (61 kWh NMC) is similar at 87 kW peak, 41 minutes 10→80%.

Battery preconditioning was added via OTA in late 2023 across the MG4 lineup; manual trigger via the EV menu about 20 minutes before a DC stop. Cold-weather without preconditioning typically halves DC speed on LFP and cuts NMC by 30–40%.

Battery technology — NMC vs LFP

MG uses two battery chemistries supplied by SAIC's in-house cell business and CATL: LFP (lithium iron phosphate) in the MG4 SE Standard (51 kWh) and ZS EV Standard, and NMC (nickel-cobalt-manganese) in MG4 Long Range / Extended Range, ZS EV Long Range, MG5 EV, and Cyberster.

All packs use 400 V architecture — there is no 800 V MG as of mid-2026. The MG4 specifically uses a flat 'one-cell-tall' pack design that lowers the floor and centre of gravity, contributing to the car's surprisingly sharp handling.

Battery warranty: 7 years / 100,000 km in the UK and EU on most trims (some Trophy trims extended to 7 years / 150,000 km), 7 years unlimited km in Australia on the MG4 and ZS EV. Guarantees >70% state of health.

Real-world degradation tracking: MG4 NMC fleet data shows around 91% capacity at 5 years / 100,000 km. LFP Standard data is more limited but suggests excellent retention (>94% at 100,000 km), in line with the broader LFP segment.

Charging network compatibility

MG does not operate a branded charging network. The MG iSmart app integrates basic public-charger maps but most owners use Zap-Map (UK), Chargemap (FR), Plugsurfing (multi-country EU), Evie or Chargefox (AU).

Plug & Charge is not currently supported on any MG model in any market. All public charging requires the network's app or RFID/contactless card.

MG buyers can use Tesla Superchargers in the UK, France and Italy on opened sites via the Tesla app. This is particularly useful for MG4 owners on long trips, since Tesla's network uptime and bay availability are typically the best in any region.

Australia: Chargefox membership is bundled with new MG4 and ZS EV purchases for 12 months. Evie, NRMA and Tesla Supercharger access cover the rest of the eastern-seaboard fast-charging corridor.

Home charging advice

Every MG EV ships with a Type 2 ICCB charging cable. For daily home use MG recommends a 7 kW wallbox (UK/AU) or 11 kW three-phase (France/Italy, where the MG4 LR/ER and Cyberster benefit from the full rate).

Recommended UK installers include Pod Point, Ohme Home Pro and Hypervolt (OZEV-eligible where applicable). French installers commonly use Wallbox Pulsar Plus and Schneider EVlink; Italian buyers favour Enel X Way JuiceBox; Australians use JET Charge and Wallbox.

The MG iSmart app handles scheduled charging to align with off-peak tariffs (Octopus Intelligent, EDF Tempo, Plenitude E-Light, Amber Electric). The app's pre-heat feature is slower than Tesla's or Hyundai's but still useful in winter.

Public charging advice

On Ionity, Fastned, InstaVolt, BP Pulse, Allego, Evie and Chargefox the MG4 LR/ER will deliver competitive session times. Lower trims and the ZS EV / MG5 EV are limited by their <100 kW peak rates — avoid expensive 350 kW cabinets where a 150 kW unit is available at lower cost.

Always trigger battery preconditioning via the EV menu about 20 minutes before a DC stop in cold weather.

MG was caught out by the 2024 closure of several Source London and Polar Plus legacy networks in the UK. Always have a backup CCS2 site within 10 km of any planned MG stop — use the EV Charge Routes station search to verify before departure.

Frequently asked questions

Is MG still a British brand?
The badge and heritage are British, but the parent company is SAIC Motor of Shanghai. Engineering and assembly are predominantly in China, with European customisation done via SAIC's UK and EU technical centres.
How long is MG's EV warranty?
7 years / 100,000 km on the vehicle in the UK and EU (some Trophy trims extended to 150,000 km), 7 years unlimited km in Australia on MG4 and ZS EV. Battery warranty matches at >70% state of health.
Can MG EVs use Tesla Superchargers?
Yes, in the UK, France and Italy at most opened sites via the Tesla app. Pricing is typically 25–35% higher than Tesla-owner rates.
What is the difference between MG4 LFP and NMC?
LFP (Standard 51 kWh) is cheaper, safer, longer-cycling, and tolerates daily 100% charging — but it loses more range in cold weather and charges slower in winter. NMC (Long Range 64 kWh and Extended Range 77 kWh) has more range, faster DC charging, and better winter behaviour.
Does MG support Plug & Charge?
Not currently — all public charging requires the network's app or card. Plug & Charge rollout is rumoured for 2026 across the SAIC EV lineup.
What is the real-world range of an MG4 Long Range?
Around 380 km mixed-cycle on the 64 kWh NMC, dropping to ~285 km in cold-weather motorway driving. WLTP is 450 km.
Is MG cheap to insure?
Yes — MG4 is typically insurance group 27 in the UK, among the cheapest EVs on sale. ZS EV is similar at group 28. This is a meaningful 5-year total-cost-of-ownership advantage.
