Grants, tax breaks & charger subsidies.

What governments will actually pay you to drive electric — across the UK, Australia, France and Italy. Updated for 2026.

Incentives change frequently. We summarise the headline schemes here, but always confirm eligibility and current amounts on the official government portal before you buy.

United Kingdom

The UK has phased out the headline Plug-in Car Grant, but home, workplace and commercial charging grants remain — and company-car BiK tax is still the single biggest saving.

Purchase grants

  • Plug-in Van Grant

    Up to £2,500 (small) / £5,000 (large)

    Businesses & sole traders

    Applied at dealer; vans under 4.25t (small) or 4.25–12t (large).

  • Plug-in Motorcycle Grant

    Up to £500

    All buyers

    Eligible electric motorcycles and mopeds.

Home & charger

  • EV Chargepoint Grant (flats & rentals)

    Up to £350 + £500 infra

    Renters, flat owners

    75% off a home charger; landlord top-up available.

  • Workplace Charging Scheme

    Up to £350 × 40 sockets

    Businesses, charities, public sector

    Voucher-based, installer claims directly.

Tax & running costs

  • Benefit-in-Kind (BiK)

    3% in 2025/26 → 9% by 2029/30

    Company-car drivers

    Versus 25–37% for petrol — usually saves £2,000+ per year.

  • Vehicle Excise Duty

    £10 first year, £195/year from year 2

    All EV owners

    Expensive Car Supplement now applies to EVs over £40k.

Australia

Incentives in Australia are state-based and changing fast. Most states have wound back rebates but kept stamp-duty and rego discounts. FBT exemption for novated leases is the biggest win.

Purchase grants

  • FBT exemption (novated lease)

    Save A$4,000–9,000 per year

    Salary-packaged EVs under the LCT threshold

    Applies to BEVs and PHEVs first held before 1 April 2025.

  • ACT zero-interest loan

    Up to A$15,000

    ACT residents

    Sustainable Household Scheme — covers EV or charger.

Home & charger

  • NSW EV home charger rebate

    Closed — check Energy Saver Scheme

    NSW residents

    Discounts now flow via accredited installers.

  • VIC / SA / QLD energy plans

    EV-friendly off-peak tariffs

    All EV owners

    Look for time-of-use plans with sub-15c/kWh overnight.

Tax & running costs

  • Stamp duty discount

    Varies by state (A$0–3,000)

    EV buyers

    ACT 0%, VIC reduced rate, others changing — check at point of sale.

  • Registration discount

    Up to A$100/year

    EV owners in NSW, VIC, ACT

    Offset against road-user charges in some states.

France

France keeps a generous bonus écologique plus a social-leasing scheme, scrappage bonus and CEE certificates that subsidise home chargers. Most incentives are income-tested.

  • Bonus écologique

    €4,000 (low income) / €3,000 standard

    EV under €47,000, eco-score qualified

    Applied at purchase; only French/EU-assembled cars qualify since 2024.

  • Prime à la conversion

    Up to €5,000

    Scrapping older petrol/diesel

    Stackable with the bonus écologique.

  • Leasing social

    From €100/month

    Low-income households

    State-backed long-term lease for new EVs.

Home & charger

  • Crédit d'impôt borne de recharge

    75% up to €500

    Homeowners & renters

    Claimed on income tax return; per charge point.

  • Programme ADVENIR

    Up to 50% of install cost

    Apartment buildings, businesses

    Covers shared chargers in collective housing.

Italy

Sfoglia le colonnine in Italia

Italy's Ecobonus is back for 2026 with bigger amounts for households scrapping a Euro 0–4 car. Regional top-ups (Lombardia, Piemonte) add another €1,500–4,000.

Purchase grants

  • Ecobonus auto

    Up to €11,000 (with scrappage)

    Households with ISEE < €30,000

    BEVs only; max list price €35,000 +VAT. Lower tiers for higher incomes.

  • Ecobonus standard

    Up to €6,000

    All BEV buyers

    €4,000 without scrappage; doubles when scrapping Euro 0–4.

Home & charger

  • Detrazione fiscale 50% (wallbox)

    50% over 10 years, up to €1,500

    Homeowners

    Part of the bonus ristrutturazione — applies to install + device.

  • Bando colonnine condominiali

    Up to 80% of cost

    Apartment buildings

    Available periodically through MASE — check open windows.

Tax & running costs

  • Bollo auto exemption

    5 years free, then 25% rate

    All EV owners

    Permanent in Lombardia, Piemonte and a few others.

  • ZTL & ZSL access

    Free city-centre access

    EV drivers

    Milan Area C, Rome ZTL, Bologna — usually free with EV plate.
